SUMMER VACATION IDEAS FOR FAMILIES TRAVELING WITH KIDS TO OHIO

A Midwest vacation is a terrific idea for families from all over the United States. If you live on either coast, a Midwest vacation gives your children an experience of life like they haven’t yet known it. And if you live in the

Midwest already, you can travel around the area at relatively low cost, exploring the adventures in your own backyard. Of all of the Midwest locations that are possible summer vacation destinations for your family, Ohio offers the most in terms of opportunities for different types of experiences.

Cedar Point

This amusement park is one of the biggest reasons to consider taking your family to Ohio for summer vacation. It has some of the biggest (and oldest) roller coasters in the country so the older kids in your family will love it and it’s got little kids’ rides, too, so it works for everyone. It’s also a lot less expensive than some of the bigger amusement parks in the country so your budget can probably consider it.

Lake Erie

The Great Lakes are amazing. They are huge. They are unbelievable. And they offer a unique family vacation experience. Head up to

Lake Erie to show your kids a side of the world that they haven’t experienced before and to get in some good quality time in the outdoors with your family.

Amish country

Ohio zoos

Interestingly, Ohio has a number of different zoos. If your family is a zoo family, you’ve definitely got some options. There’s the large zoo in

Toledo which has more different kinds of animals than probably any other zoo in the country. There’s the African Safari Wildpark where the animals are uncaged and you can drive past them. And there are zoos in the major cities of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.

College tours

If you happen to have a family that’s got a teenager in it, you might consider doing a tour of the college campuses in Ohio. There are a large number of them and they offer some very different college experiences. And there are lots of all ages things to do around many of them so the younger kids in the family can have fun, too. This is a great way to slip some education into your summer vacation plans. Ohio has many different aspects to it. It has a simple side and an urban life, an educational side and a fun side “¦ and it’s a state that tends to be very family-friendly. Explore its edges with your family this summer for a great Midwestern getaway.

I have lived in Ohio most of my life, and there are many wonderful places to visit here. The north shore has some wonderful attractions, including some of the most beautiful beaches. I may be a bit biased, but the beach at Township Park in Conneaut is one of the nicest along the lake, and is accompanied by a great play area for kids, and wonderful scenic picnic sites.

Each summer at the Conneaut waterfront, there is a reenactment of D-Day, storming of Normandy, complete with air support and the personnel carriers. For those history buffs there is also a railroad museum, and the historical society in town does a wonderful job of preserving the little treasures, like the octagon house on Liberty (there another on Old Mill Rd).

Other areas of interest - the Serpent Mounds are fascinating, and there are other mound sites as well. Hocking Hills is an incredibly beautiful natural area. Cincinnati has its waterfront. Columbus has a beautiful zoo, and COSI, among other attractions. Cleveland also has a wonderful zoo, incredible museums (my kids love the Natural HIstory Museam), and the Flats.

I admit it - I am a great fan of my home state. It is the epitomy of what the midwest has to offer to vacationers!
