Finding Family/Child Friendly US Beaches

For those who may be planning a family vacation and dream of days sitting on the beach, finding a child friendly or family-oriented beach town might be a desirable setting. Fortunately, there are plenty of family beaches to choose from and no matter where in the United States you may want to plan your vacation you are sure to find the perfect family beach setting.

Northeast Region

There are quite a few nice child friendly beaches in the Northeast part of the country. Those who crave a cooler beach setting, Maine is a wonderful state to vacation within. One extremely attractive beach in Maine which is also family friendly is Old Orchard Beach, Maine. This wonderful family beach resort has amusements, dining and more to keep families entertained. As for the beach itself, those who set foot upon it will enjoy all the sand and surf has to offer them.

Another wonderful beach area in the Northeast perfect for families of all sizes and ages is Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. This beach setting offers a wide range of activities for families such as sunning, swimming, sand castle building and hiking. The Cape Cod atmosphere is wonderful for families throughout this area however Coast Guard Beach has received rave reviews as being a great family-oriented beach spot.

Further south along the Atlantic coastline is the family beach town of Ocean City, New Jersey. This is known as the family resort and caters mainly to the family crowd. As a “dry town” there is no alcohol sold within the city limits, which goes for liquor stores, beer distributors and restaurants. The beach area in the south portion of the Island is wonderful for those families who like to swim and sun without the crowds of the boardwalk and noise from the stores present in the northern part of town. In the alternative, for those families who like to walk along the boardwalk in between their sunning time and get a bite to eat, the area further north is the perfect beach spot to choose.

South Region

Further down the coastline one will be met with a wide array of options when it comes to family friendly beaches. In North Carolina, a quaint town known as Duck is the perfect vacation spot for families to go. The beaches here provide families with a wide area to run and play without having all of the hustle and bustle sometimes known to other beaches. This beach area is perfect for small family vacations or large family reunions. The kids are sure to enjoy wading in the water and playing on the soft sand.

If families are hoping to travel to a beach for their family vacation and like the water to be a bit warmer, beaches on the Gulf of Mexico provide the answer. One town which has some of the most beautiful beaches in the South is Marco Island. Located just south of Naples, Florida, Marco Island offers a little bit of everything with its beaches. Some of the more attractive attributes of this family friendly beach include the warm water, soft white sand perfect for playing and excellent shelling opportunities. One particular beach which is a good place for families to enjoy on Marco Island is Tigertail Beach. This beach has a wonderful selection of shells and great space perfect for a family picnic.

Midwest Region

Although the Midwest may not be known for its vast array of beaches, one beach in particular stands out as being a family friendly beach. This beach is Indiana Dunes State Park Beach which is located in the Gary, Indiana vicinity. The beach has approximately three miles of sand for families to enjoy and bask in the sun. This place is perfect for family picnics and enjoying some quiet time together.

West Region

For those families who are interested in going to beaches in the western region of the United States, they will find a number of great options. One such beach which is perfect for taking the children to is Coronado Beach in San Diego, California. For families who love to swim, watch fish jump in the water and build sandcastles along the beach, this is the perfect stop to make.

Another good family friendly beach in California is Capitola. This area provides fun for the whole family but especially the kids. Swimming and sunning are key components on this beach and the entire family is sure to enjoy their time on Capitola.

For those who may not mind a cooler beach climate, Newport, Oregon is the place to go. This beach area allows parents and children to spot whales and enjoy nature at its very best…in a beach setting.

Best Theme Parks & Amusement Parks in the West US

Theme parks provide fun for everyone. There are smaller rides for the young children and thrilling rides for the older kids and adults. No matter what you crave in the way of theme park entertainment you are sure to find it at one of the many theme parks in the area. The following will list some of the more popular theme parks throughout the western region of the United States.

Lakeside Amusement Park - Denver Colorado

In Denver, Colorado you will find a century old theme park called Lakeside Amusement Park. This theme park features all of the rides of the golden age such as the tilt-a-whirl, carousel, the Flying Dutchman and more. In addition, you will find newer rides such as the Zoom and the Dragon, two thrilling rides to enjoy. The park also has a variety of kiddie rides and food. In addition, the general park admission is quite inexpensive and the tickets are extremely reasonable in price as well.

Silverwood Theme Park - Athol, Idaho

Silverwood Theme Park in Athol, Idaho is a large amusement park with plentiful fun waiting for its visitors. At Silverwood you will find over 65 rides and attractions including Tremors, Panic Plunge and a wide array of kiddie rides. Boulder Beach Water Park is also part of Silverwood which has attractions such as tubing, water slides and wave pools. The food is also fantastic at Silverwood and there is so much to choose from in the way of meals.

Adventuredome Theme Park - Las Vegas, Nevada

For those who think that Las Vegas, Nevada is only for adults they obviously have never been to the Adventuredome Theme Park. This 5-acre indoor amusement wonderland has a variety of rides such as a corkscrew roller coaster, slingshot to propel you into the air and a thrilling whirl ride. Family rides are also plentiful and you will find rides such as the popular carousel, the B.C. Bus ride and more.

Lagoon Park - Salt Lake City, Utah

If you are in the Salt Lake City, Utah area then you are undoubtedly familiar with Lagoon Park. Located in Farmington, Utah, Lagoon Park provides many different rides and entertainment options for the entire family. Some of the highlights of this park include Pioneer Village and Lagoon-A-Beach.

Disneyland - Anaheim, California

Perhaps one of the most famous theme parks in the United States and certainly the West is Disneyland. Here in Anaheim, California you will find all of your favorite Disney characters, tons of rides, great entertainment and fun for the whole family. Roller coasters, family rides and kiddie rides are all part of the Disneyland adventure.

SeaWorld - San Diego, California

Six Flags Magic Mountain - Los Angeles, California

Some of the park highlights include the X2 roller coaster and Thomas Town, which are both new attractions in the spring of 2008.

Best Theme Parks in the Southwest

In the southwest portion of the United States you will find warm climate and southern hospitality abound. You will also find a good amount of theme parks for the entire family to enjoy. Some of the more well known parks will be described below. Enchanted Island Amusement Park

If you are in the Phoenix, Arizona area then a trip to the Enchanted Island Amusement Park is a must. This park is one which caters to the smaller children. It has gentler rides such as the carousel, C.P. Huntington Train which tours the grounds, the Dragon Wagon for a little wilder fun and the parachutes ride which will take you high in the sky to view the park. This amusement park also features fun coin operated games and games of skill. For a break in between the rides and games, head on over to the snack bar for an ice cream sandwich and a hot dog.

Cliff’s Amusement Park

If you are in the Albuquerque, New Mexico region and are anxious to get to the nearest theme park then heading over to Cliff’s Amusement Park should do the trick. This park features thrill rides such as the SideWinder, the Cliff Hanger and the Falling Star. For those who want an easier ride while visiting Cliff’s Amusement Park you should try the carousel or the family train ride. There is a little bit of something for everyone at Cliff’s Amusement Park.

Frontier City

Located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma fun seekers will find the land of Frontier City. This amusement park has over 50 fun rides, a variety of entertainment and food to feed the whole family. Sometimes when we plan our family vacation we want to do something completely different from other vacations. I have researched a few vacations that are unique, but also fun. So include that fun factor with your decision and it will make for a memorable family vacation.

First, if you like Tropical Islands and relaxation, a few ideas you might want to consider are:

Cruising Around the Barrier Islands

How about a day of shelling on deserted beaches, or perhaps swimming in emerald green water, or even fishing under the stars relaxing at night? If these ideas sound like fun to you, then try these islands out … Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva and Cavo Costa which are all off the Southwest Florida coast. This could make for a memorable time for you and your family. You will create new memories with your family in this once in a lifetime vacation that your kids will always remember.

Kelsey Family Dude Ranch in Montana

How about you and your family roughing it out while you leave the rest of the world behind. Leave all of your computers, tvs, radios, cell phones, and PDAs behind. Galapagos Islands

Finally the ultimate vacation that I would love to go and see is a visit to the Galapagos Islands. You can see the wildlife and enjoy hikes, kayaking, rafting, canoing and fishing. There are five islands to visit. Like I said I think this would be the greatest vacation possible.

It’s strictly up to you and your family when deciding what and where you want to go. Make it a decision made by all and everyone will enjoying it that much more.

The Ultimate East Coast Amusement Park and Water Park Family Road trip For Less

There are few things I enjoy more than going to amusement parks and water parks with my wife and kids. In just one day, I get a SD card full of great memories to download from my camera. The kids remember the best parts for ages and there is nothing like the bonding you get from going down the giant hill with your little ones on their first real roller coaster. It’s no secret that cost of admission to the great parks (and even the lousy ones) costs an arm and a leg though. This past summer though I figured out how to go to amusement parks and water parks with all my kids all the way up and down the east coast from Pennsylvania to Florida for around $125 a piece. I also got free preferred parking at the parks and discounts on any souvenirs and food I bought. Your mileage may vary a bit since prices and policies change, but this is how I did it.

The key to the whole thing is Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA. Sesame Place is part of the network of Busch parks throughout the country, but they are mostly on the east coast. If you buy a Super Grover seasons pass at Sesame Place, you also get free entry and parking at almost all of the other Busch parks. Plus when I called to buy my tickets, I found out that if you ask you can get a family pack on these for a discount that took about $30 off the price for us in 2008. So instead of paying around $150 each for the 5 passes I would need for my family I saved more than the cost of a pass by buying in the bundle. Since I live in PA, I also had the extra advantage of going back to Sesame Place several times with my kids, but the kicker was all the other parks we went to.

These are the Busch amusement parks that are on the east coast that I was able to visit on my amusement park family road trip all for that one fee (I’ll also be putting together feedback on each of the parks we visited from my viewpoint and my children’s in the near future. If there is a link on a park name it is pointing to the review of that park):

First we went to Sesame Place. The cost of daily tickets to Sesame place for my family of five (really we’re 6, but baby was 18 months so got in free everywhere) would have been around $50 a piece so $250 for the day plus the cost of parking. The ticket is actually a two day pass for the price of one.

Next we spent several days in Williamsburg, VA at Busch Gardens Europe and Water Country USA. We went to Busch Gardens one day and Water Country USA for two days. Two days at the water park would have cost me $360 plus the cost of parking each day, the one day at Busch Gardens would have been around $250 plus parking. So just from those 3 days of parks I was able to about match what I spent for the passes, when you include the cost of the day at Sesame place we are already far exceeding it. The rest is just gravy at this point and there is a whole lot of gravy.

Next we drove to Tampa to Busch Gardens Africa. There is also Adventure Island Water park, but is was closed when we went. It reopens for 2009 though so you could go as part of this family roadtrip. I really enjoyed Busch Garden’s Africa, but I’ll leave the details to the review. A day at Busch Gardens Tampa would cost $60 each or $300 (like Sesame Place, they are currently offering a second day free included in this cost). They aren’t giving prices right now for the water park, but I would expect it to be around the same price as Water Country USA, so that would be another $180 for the day.

Then you get to the climax of the trip, Orlando. Did you know Sea World is a Busch park? Well, it is and admission and parking is also included with the Super Grover Passport. Not only that, by Aquatica, the new Busch family water park opened in Orlando in 2008 and that is included too. One day tickets to Seaworld for my family would have been around $65 each or $325, for Aquatica the cost would have been around $210 for us.

On the way back, we could have gone through all of these parks again, but frankly we were so exhausted by the fun we had on our family vacation amusement park road trip that we were ready to get back home. Now of course you need to add the cost of food and lodging and gas to the trip, but the savings on amusement park and water park tickets on the trip made an affordable outing out of a trip that we definitely could not have otherwise done. So we end up with tickets costing $625 that if we went to all the parks and bought the individual tickets, it would have been almost $2000. The difference covered most of the other expenses for the trip.

A Review of Kids’ / Toddlers’ Travel Potties

One thing that I hate about potty training a toddler is that it then becomes way too difficult to go anywhere without worrying about potential wetting accidents. I love the idea of getting a travel potty for my 2 year old toddler, so I am writing this article while I am researching products for my little girl. I have heard very good things about the Caboose, but the Potty-on-the-Go might be the way to go because I think that it looks like it would stay the most clean / sanitary. What are your thoughts everyone?

Travel Potty ($23.19)

A travel potty that is great for toddlers and young children to take along on long car trips or camping. The nice thing is that it easily folds to briefcase size. Attach the disposable bag, and this potty goes anywhere. The two large storage compartments provide room for supplies, and it comes with 4 zip lock disposable gallon bags. Uses standard gallon size storage bags. Ages 18 mos. and up to 70 lbs.

PROS: The seat is light and it has adequate storage for underwear, baby wipes, and extra storage bags. One parent said that they can fit about six-eight pullups, fifteen bags, and half a pack of baby wipes in both compartments with additional space left. Another positive is that you can just buy the generic brand of gallon bags and they work just fine…so you don’t have to waste money on buying special bags.

CONS: A few parents complained about the small circumference of the potty seat for their little boys, so if you have a little boy who stands up while they pee, they will have to sit when using this potty seat.

Fisher-Price Potty On-the-Go … Also Comes in Other Colors ($69.99)

The base is sturdy and folds flat to fit in the snazzy tote. The tote is discreet and includes pockets for wipes, toilet paper, etc. When the time comes, simply attach a garbage bag, throw in a nursing pad, and dispose. It potty is easily wiped clean, and the tote keeps it from getting dirty when transporting. The Potty On-the-Go includes five disposable bags and absorbent pads, but the nice thing is that they recommend replacing these with generic four-gallon bags and nursing pads–couldn’t be easier. Designed for comfort, cleanliness and convenience, with smooth, easy-to-wipe-clean surfaces and a mess-free, disposable bag and absorbent pad waste containment system. Just tie it, and toss it! Potty folds flat for compact carry in a machine-washable, take-along tote with organizer pockets that keep your personal care supplies handy, like your wipes and hand sanitizer. Includes 5 disposable bags and 5 absorbent pads. Replace with standard 4-gallon garbage bags and any type of absorbent pads (nursing pads, sanitary pads, etc.).

PROS: Very easy to put together and take apart. The bag has room for toilet paper or whatever. The bag makes it very portable and easy to use for travel.

CONS: It is a bit bulky. The hole is a bit small so your child might have to be a pro at aiming.

Caboose Travel Diaper Potty ($18.99)

The Caboose Travel Diaper Potty is an inexpensive travel potty that uses a diaper as a liner, giving your toddler the ability to go anywhere, anytime, with easy cleanup for you! It’s Compact! So small, it fits on a standard sheet of paper. The top fits in the base for even more compact storage. It can fit in your diaper bag, or under the stroller, or on the floorboard of the car. It’s Convenient! With our patented diaper-catching design, give your toddler a clean , real potty that works. Because when you gotta go, you gotta go!

PROS: The major positive is the price. This Caboose uses a diaper, what a unique idea. The carrying case is easy to open, and setting up the potty with a diaper is really easy. When done, you just roll up the diaper and throw it away, no worrying about leaks or anyone seeing what is inside.

CONS: One mom did mention that she loves it but that she wishes that the two pieces would snap or latch together as the top and bottom of the potty just sit on top of each other. If there is much movement it slides apart.

Kalencom POTETTE - On the Go Potty ($10)

A must for kids “on the go”. Now there’s always a clean restroom close by! Our take-along potty is comfortable, sturdy, and folds flat in its carry tote for easy travel. Sets up in seconds; just unfold the legs. Very sanitary, too: its clever disposable liner has a scented pad that absorbs contents and odors. Three liners included; additional liners sold separately. Ideal for the car, boat, and camper. Supports kids up to 50 lbs.

PROS: One mother mentioned that she had the Fisher Price Travel Potty and that she liked the On the Go Potty much better for travel because it is much less bulky. It is small and lightweight, so it fits in your purse or pack, sets up quick and stays clean. disposal of the used bags is easy because they have absorbent pads inside and you can tie them securely so that they won’t make any messes until you find a trash can. The potette has a thick plastic bag it comes in, so you can even stick the used bag inside that with the potette till you find a trash.

CONS: A few parents complained that the potty is much too small for children over 3 years old.

As legend goes, Buck’s Pocket is where all the defeated public officials go to lick their wounds after an unsuccessful election. This 2,000-acre park in northeast Alabama is secluded in a natural pocket of the Appalachian Mountains chain. The park’s picnic area offers a canyon rim natural vista into the pocket below. The pocket itself, on an upstream tributary of Lake Guntersville, hosts an improved campground, complete with tables, grills, shelters, laundry, comfort station, playground and hiking trails. The Park is located two miles north of Grove Oak in northeast Alabama.

Wind Creek State Park Camping - Alexander City, AL

Facilities at Frank Jackson State Park include a handicap accessible bathhouse, picnic pavilion/shelter and walkway located adjacent to the campground. Swimming, fishing (Alabama Fishing License required), and boat launch (Boater’s License required, if applicable) are included in the camping fee.
