Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary - Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary was named in recognition of Milton "Sam" Gray, who studied the area in the 1960's as a biological collector and curator at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, GA. The near-shore hard-bottom reef off the coast of Sapelo Island was recognized by Sam Gray in 1961 in connection with his extensive biological surveys of the ocean floor off the Georgia coast. Collections made during the surveys are under the protective supervision of the University of Georgia Natural History Museum and maintained as the “Gray’s Reef Collection.” In 1974, Jesse Hunt, a graduate student working under Jim Henry was the first scientist to study the reef. He proposed the name “Gray’s Reef” for this live-bottom habitat to commemorate Sam’s valuable contribution to the understanding of offshore habitats and marine organisms, especially those of the near-shore continental shelf of Georgia.

Savannah History Museum - The Savannah History Museum is housed in the old Central of Georgia Railway passenger shed, a National Historic Landmark built in the 1850s and 1860s. The railway used the building until 1972. In 1984, a historical attraction called The Great Savannah Exposition opened in the building. The Coastal Heritage Society took over operation of the successor to the Exposition, the Savannah History Museum, in 1990. The museum is now home to more than 10,000 artifacts-- the largest collection of artifacts in the entire coastal community. Morris Museum of Art - The first museum in the country dedicated to celebrating and exploring the art and artists of the South, the Morris Museum of Art has a permanent collection of some 2,500 paintings and works on paper. Ezekiel Harris House - The Ezekiel Harris House, circa 1797, is a reminder of the days when tobacco was the primary cash crop in Georgia . Following the Revolutionary War, the area which now includes Wilkes, Elbert, Franklin, Lincoln, Warren, Oglethorpe and Greene counties was opened for settlement. Liberal land grants and rich soil attracted tobacco planters who had depleted their farmlands in Virginia and North Carolina by planting tobacco year after year. Towns sprang up around the tobacco inspection stations and warehouses.

American Camellia Society - The American Camellia Society celebrated its 55th Anniversary in 2000. The society was founded in Macon, Georgia, following a conceptual meeting the previous year in Savannah, Georgia. From a humble start with headquarters in a two-room laboratory on the University Campus at Gainesville, Florida, the society moved to donated space at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton, Georgia. In 1968, through a generous gift of 160 acres by the late Dr. Dave Strother, the Society moved to the location it now occupies, at Massee Lane Gardens in Fort Valley, Georgia. James Oglethorpe Monument - In 1930. this 38-foot marble monument was erected atop Mount Oglethorpe in Pickens County as an early celebration of the 1933 bicentennial of Georgia. Eventually, lightning, weather, and vandals had caused severe damage to the monument. In the late 1990s, it was removed to Jasper and work began on its restoration. In 1999, the monument was re-erected on Main St. across from the Old Pickens County Jail. In 2001, a historical marker about the monument was erected near its base. The monument has no text, though at the base of the shaft is a bust of James Oglethorpe, the state seal, and a map of Georgia.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site - The culture of a forgotten empire comes alive at this historic rice plantation along the Altamaha River. Visitors can walk beneath live oak to the antebellum home furnished with fine antiques, then gaze from the porch past magnolias and camellias to the marsh where rice once flourished. The museum features fine silver, a model of a working rice plantation, and a slide show about the life of planters and slaves. Around 1807, William Brailsford of Charleston began carving a rice plantation from the virgin cypress swamps along the Altamaha River. His son-in-law, James M. Troup, acquired additional land along the river. By the time Troup passed away, he owned 7,300 acres of land, 357 slaves, and several homes.
