Atkinson Lake State Recreation Area - Atkinson Lake State Recreation Area's original lake impoundment built in 1894 by the Atkinson Milling and Irrigation Company and was operated for milling purposes and hydroelectric generation until 1929 when high water washed out the dam. In 1947, the city of Atkinson deeded the dam to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. In 1949, the Game and Parks rebuilt the structure but in the early 60's high water washed out the dam again and a third time in 1984 reducing it to just a stream.

Carhenge - Carhenge, which replicates Stonehenge, consists of the circle of cars, 3 standing trilithons within the circle, the heel stone, slaughter stone, and 2 station stones, and the Aubrey circle, named after Sir John Aubrey who first recognized the earthworks and great stones as a prehistoric temple in 1648. It was not until excavations undertaken in the 1920's that they were found to be holes cut to hold timber uprights. A total of 56 holes were discovered and named the Aubrey Holes in honor of John Aubrey's observation.

Here the east-west human transportation corridor provided by the river valley crosses the North American Central Flyway. Changing land use patterns and development of the Missouri River have shaped the Flyway into an hourglass figure, with its narrow waist in south central Nebraska. Millions of waterfowl pass through the region on their annual migration. Each spring several hundred thousand Sandhill Cranes spend four to six weeks in the Platte Valley, gaining strength before moving north to nesting grounds spread across Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. The Middle Platte provides critical habitat for a number of endangered species, including the whooping crane.

Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium Outdoor Education Center - This Game and Parks Commission complex is the only facility of its type in the Great Plains. Many organizations and individuals worked long and hard to bring it into reality. Its 12,000 square feet include the aquarium, terrarium, natural history classroom, World Herald Auditorium, orientation and display area, and office space. Exterior of the building is fluted concrete block and stone from a local quarry. The viewing area itself is somewhat unusual, since the 12 display tanks are placed on the outside of a circle and spaced so only one tank is visible at a time . . . adding to the visitor's enjoyment.
