Koger Center for the Arts -The Ira & Nancy Koger Center for the arts demonstrates the cooperative spirit present in South Carolina. Its construction is the product of a shared dream and a shared labour of love for many in the community; a combined effort, with both public and private entities contributing to make this dream a reality. The center is named for philanthropists Ira and Nancy Koger, who made a substantial donation from personal and corporate funds for construction of the $15 million center. The descendants of Ambrose Elliott Gonzales, Narciso Gener Gonzales, and William Elliott Gonzales made a large donation to the center and the auditorium is named Gonzales Hall in acknowledgement of their contribution. Other major donations to the construction costs were made by the Knight Foundation of Akron, Ohio, Richland County, and the City of Columbia. The University of South Carolina and the Carolina Research and Development Foundation obtained private gifts for the remainder of the construction costs. Special gifts include a Steinway concert grand piano which has been donated to the Koger Center by Alice Barron Pearce and her two children, L. Carter and Holmes Orchids - For many years, Carter and Holmes Orchids has been the premier source for orchids of every variety. Bill Carter and Owen Holmes began selling orchids as cut flowers in the years following World War II when corsage flowers were in great demand for Valentine's Day, Easter, and Mother's Day. As lifestyles became less formal in the 1960's and the demand for cut flowers decreased, we began producing orchids for home growing. We started hybridizing orchids in the 1950's and developed our own modern laboratory for seed and tissue culture in the 1970's. Our hybridizing program has resulted in worldwide recognition for Carter & Holmes as a source for outstanding orchids - in particular, art-shade cattleyas. Today, we ship orchid plants of many genera to hobbyists and commercial growers throughout the United States and to many countries around the world.

Confederate Relic Room and Museum - - Founded in 1896 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South Carolina military history from the Revolutionary War to the present, emphasizing South Carolina's Confederate era. The museum is also accredited by the American Association of Museums. Only 11 of approximately 200 museums and historic sites in South Carolina have earned this distinction. Just 750 museums out of 16,000 nationally are accredited. A nationally known Civil War flag collection, a significant South Carolina uniform collection, and a growing weapons collection are complemented by a historical archives collection and a 19th and 20th century textile collection, allowing the museum to interpret the political and social influences on South Carolina's military history. In September 2002, the S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Museum reopened in a renovated 17,000 square foot area of the old Columbia Mills Building, near the State Museum. The martial tradition of South Carolina is a theme running throughout the new exhibit and highlights the state's unique but influential role in the history of our nation during the time between the Revolutionary War and Reconstruction. There are also exhibits on South Carolina's involvement in the Spanish-American War and both world wars. Some artifacts on exhibit are: Flag of the Palmetto Regiment, the famed SC volunteer militia that helped capture Mexico City in 1848. "Wade Hampton for Governor" banner from the gubernatorial campaign from 1876 at the end of Reconstruction. General Judson Kilpatrick letter calling SC the "hellhole of secession," and vowing to wreak havoc as Sherman's cavalry commander. Battle Flags of 9 of South Carolina's Regiments on Display. Flag of the Union 2nd SC Infantry composed of freed South Carolina slaves. Brigadier General Micah Jenkins' Confederate frock coat worn when he was killed in 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. Model of the USS COLUMBIA , a World War II light cruiser that fought in the Pacific Theater.

In 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in Fredericksburg, Va., At that time, there were an estimated 1.3 million wild turkeys and 1.5 million turkey hunters. Shortly after its founding, the NWTF moved to Edgefield, S.C., where it is headquartered today. Thanks to the work of federal, state and provincial wildlife agencies and the NWTF's many volunteers and partners, there are now close to 7 million wild turkeys and nearly 3 million turkey hunters. Turkey hunting has become the fastest growing form of hunting and has the second-highest number of participants of any type of hunting. Since 1985, more than $202 million NWTF and cooperator dollars have been spent on over 31,000 projects benefiting wild turkeys and other game and nongame species throughout North America. Parris Island Museum - Parris Island is the birthplace of basically trained Marines. It is here where America's young men and women transform into Marines. We believe that Marines are forged in a furnace of shared hardship and tough training. This common intense experience creates bonds of comradeship and standards of conduct so strong that Marines will let nothing stand in their way. This belief will continue to be the basis upon which we make Marines. Holding on to the high character of the Marines of the past, we look for ways to inculcate the strong values that have become synonymous with the Marine Corps. Through Parris Island's challenging recruit training, the Marine Corps is preparing its Marines for the 21st century. Marine Corps recruits are trained not only physically and mentally, but morally as well. Forming the bedrock of any Marine's character are the Core Values -- Honor, Courage and Commitment. By incorporating these values into recruit training, the Marine created is not just a basically trained, morally conscious, Marine, but also a better American citizen who will return to society following his or her service to this country. Historic Seaport of Georgetown - Few other areas in America contain more history or charm than Georgetown, South Carolina. From its earliest beginnings as the probable site of the first European settlement in North America in 1526, to its present status as a vibrant and gracious city of 9,000, Georgetown has long been known for its warm hospitality and Southern charm. The third oldest city in South Carolina, following Charleston and Beaufort, Georgetown was founded in 1729 and became an official port of entry in 1732. Prior to this, all foreign exports and imports had to pass through Charleston. Duties and the added freight had to be paid there. With the designation of Georgetown as a port of entry, the area's merchants and planters could deal directly with all ports, bypassing Charleston.
