National Civil Rights Museum - The aftershock of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968 would plunge the Lorraine Motel, a small minority-owned business in the south-end of downtown Memphis, into a long and steep decline. The motel’s owner, Walter Lane Bailey kept a couple of rooms as a shrine to Dr. King and to Bailey’s wife, Lorraine, who died of a brain hemorrhage several hours after King was shot. By 1982, the Lorraine Motel was a foreclosed property. A group of prominent Memphians, concerned that this historic site would be destroyed through continued neglect and indifference, formed the Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation to save the Lorraine. Using a design report by a former Smithsonian Institution, Benjamin Lawless, the Foundation started seeking funding for the nations’s first comprehensive exhibit chronicling America’s civil rights movement.

Belle Meade Plantation - In 1807, Virginian John Harding bought Dunham's Station log cabin and 250 acres on the Natchez Trace. For the next 100 years, the Harding family prospered, building their domain into a 5,400 acre plantation that was world renowned as a thoroughbred horse farm. In the early years, Harding boarded horses for neighbors such as Andrew Jackson, and he was breeding thoroughbreds by 1816. He shipped grain to Charleston and New Orleans, and owned large tracts of land in Arkansas and Louisiana. The War Between the States brought deprivation and danger to Belle Meade. During the Battle of Nashville, Union and rebel forces skirmished in the front yard, and the mansion's massive stone columns were riddled with bullets, the evidence still visible today. In the years after the Civil War, Belle Meade's reputation as a first-class breeding establishment attracted buyers from around the world for the annual yearling sales.

The Museum of Appalachia - What better way was there to understand their rich culture and heritage, and the culture and heritage of all America, than through the everyday articles they made, used, mended, and cherished.? The Museum was opened in the late 1960s with one log building, the General Bunch House, on a two-acre plot. Now it has grown to 65 acres, including dozens of authentic log structures, a large Display Building, and extensive Craft and Gift (and Antique) Shop, a Restaurant, the Mountain Heritage Room, the popular Appalachian Hall of Fame Building, the People's Building, and over a quarter million items. It was my intention not to develop a cold, formal, lifeless "museum." Rather, I have aimed for the "lived-in" look, striving for, above all else, authenticity. It was my goal to make the Bunch House, the Arnwine Cabin, and all the other dwellings appear as though the family had just strolled down to the spring to fetch the daily supply of water.

Louise Mandrell Theater - Never A Dull Moment at Mandrell Show by Mitch Moore It's been almost six years since I first saw Louise Mandrell perform at her Pigeon Forge music theater. I still remember that show, particularly how the minutes seemed to fly by as Louise and her cast unleashed two hours' worth of song, dance and variety that set a new benchmark for entertainment in the Smokies. I've since lost count of how many times I've seen Louise perform over the years. But as I darken the theater door to catch her show for 2004, my sense of anticipation is cranked up a few notches. From the opening number-in which Louise sails in on a star with her name blazing in lights across the curtain-to the dizzying and spectacular finale, this real-life star draws you into her world and plays the ever-accommodating host as you sit back and marvel at what unfolds on stage. Louise delivers more than two dozen new songs that reflect the singer's incredible range of musical interests and abilities.
