The Austin Nature and Science Center - The purpose of the Austin Nature and Science Center (ANSC) is to provide individuals, families, and groups from the surrounding Central Texas area with educational and recreational opportunities which increase each person’s knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of the Central Texas natural environment and its connection to other world ecosystems. This purpose is best achieved through the ANSC’s role as a "living museum," whose efforts are focused on the creative use of specifically planned interpretive exhibits, programs, collections, and trails. It is recognized that such planning and implementation is most successfully developed by professional staff with the active support of community volunteers, student interns, and special consultants. It is also acknowledged that the ANSC supports the goals of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Austin as a model for appropriate human activities regarding the conservation of natural resources. Furthermore, the ANSC recognizes the value and benefits of the support and counsel from its two formally acknowledged community advisory groups, the Austin Natural Science Association and the Natural Science Guild of Austin. For the future our greatest challenge is to provide exhibits and services that will attract and serve a larger audience, while still fostering a model for appropriate human activities regarding the conservation of natural resources. This challenge is intensified by the need to educate our audience about local and world wide environmental issues, how we are affected by these issues locally, and what solutions we can accomplish on a local basis

Stephen F. Austin Mast Arboretum - The Mast Arboretum at Stephen F. Austin State University has many reasons to be proud. It is the only university arboretum in Texas. There are 60 acres of gardens and 216 varieties of Japanese maples—the South’s largest collection. It is home to the state’s largest azalea garden, with more than 600 varieties. And it has a dedicated group of supporters. “The arboretum has been made possible because of outstanding outside support,” says Director Dave Creech. A $1 million charitable gift annuity established by Patricia and her late husband, Adlai Mast, funded three endowments, which support university programs, including the Mast Arboretum. “There’s no doubt that the Mast gift has been just the ticket for the Mast Arboretum’s long-term development and sustainability,” says Creech. “In our case, the arboretum has grown primarily because of outside-the-university interest and excitement about our program.” The arboretum’s mission is to: • Promote the conservation, selection and use of native plants of Texas. • Acquire, evaluate and promote new and adapted landscape plant materials and promote plant diversity. • Serve as a living laboratory for students and faculty and the nursery and landscape industry. • Provide an aesthetic and educational environment for students, visitors and local citizens.

If you have ever seen a horse in one of rodeo's timed events, been along for work on a ranch or watched a Western on the big or small screen, 9 times out of 10 you have witnessed an American Quarter Horse. These heavily muscled, compact horses could run a short distance over a straightaway faster than any other horse, and the fastest were called Celebrated American Quarter Running Horses by English colonists in the 1600s. Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum - Housed in what was the home of the late Marion Koogler McNay, the McNay Art Museum focuses primarily on 19th- and 20th- century European and American art. Artists featured include Cézanne, Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse, O’Keeffe, Cassatt, and Hopper. The museum’s collection of prints and drawings is one of the finest in the Southwest. The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts is one of the premier collections of its kind in the country. Contemporary art and modern sculpture are growing strengths of the McNay collection, which now numbers over 14,000 objects. The McNay was the first modern art museum in Texas. Marion Koogler McNay left her art collection, her Spanish Colonial Revival-style residence, and an endowment "for the advancement and enjoyment of modern art." The 23 acres of grounds, which include fountains, broad lawns and a Japanese- inspired garden and fishpond, are popular for picnics and photography. The museum also features a research library with 30,000 volumes, the 300-seat Leeper Auditorium, and a Museum Store. The McNay's founder, for whom the museum is named, was "a discriminating collector, an earnest student of the fine arts and a philanthropist of the first magnitude." Steadfast in her commitment to "the advancement and enjoyment of modern art," Mrs. McNay's original bequest included her important art collection, her 24-room Spanish Colonial Revival-style mansion, the 23 acres upon which it sits, and most of her fortune. The McNay was founded in 1950 and opened to the public four years later.

The Alamo - More than 2.5 million people a year visit the 4.2 acre complex known worldwide as "The Alamo." Most come to see the old mission where a small band of Texans held out for thirteen days against the Centralist army of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Although the Alamo fell in the early morning hours of March 6, 1836, the death of the Alamo Defenders has come to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty. The memories of James Bowie, David Crockett, and William B. Travis are as powerful today as when the Texan Army under Sam Houston shouted "Remember the Alamo!" as it routed Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The Alamo has been managed by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1905. Located on Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Alamo represents nearly 300 years of history. Three buildings - the Shrine, Long Barrack Museum and Gift Museum - house exhibits on the Texas Revolution and Texas History. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the beautiful Alamo Gardens. Just a short distance from the River Walk, the Alamo is a "must see" for all who come to San Antonio

Hertzberg Circus Collection & Museum - In 2001 the Hertzberg Circus Collection and Museum at 210 W. Market Street ceased operation. This action was necessary because the condition of the building compromised the condition of both the circus memorabilia and the book and document archives. Bexar County and the City of San Antonio are conducting a feasibility study on creating a San Antonio/Bexar County History Center in that location. The Library continues to provide security, protect the remaining collection, and monitor the building's condition. Neither the circus memorabilia nor the collections have been disposed of or thrown away. The City has reached an agreement with the Witte Museum, also named as a beneficiary in Harry Hertzberg's will, to ensure responsible and appropriate placement of the circus collection. From now through September 6, selected items from the Hertzberg Circus Collection are on display at the Witte Museum.

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza - Dallas, Texas…Reporters following President John F. Kennedy's trip to Texas expected to cover a routine political event in Dallas on November 22, 1963. No one expected the day to lead to catastrophe when the Kennedy motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza. The moment the shots were fired, journalists suddenly found themselves in the vortex of an unfolding news story. The assassination of President Kennedy was big news, breaking news-and it was the responsibility of the reporters to cover the chaos. As the story developed, the men and women of the media disseminated the information as it was gathered, marking a turning point in the way Americans received their news. Covering Chaos, a new exhibition organized by The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, explores the challenges faced by the reporters in Dallas covering the Kennedy assassination. To adequately narrate the four days of continuous news coverage (November 22 - November 25, 1963), the exhibition makes use of historic footage, photographs, artifacts, and highlights of the Museum's oral history collection.

The Hudnall Planetarium - The history of Hudnall Planetarium is intricately linked with the history of Tyler Junior College and the history of Tyler, Texas itself. An interesting insight into the history and culture of the Hudnall can be gleaned by reading a 1985 TJC Interoffice Memorandum written by Frances Friedman, to Dr. Raymond Van Cleef & Albert Baade. The subject of the memo was a “Comprehensive Report on Hudnall Planetarium”. At the time the memo was written, Frances Friedman was the Director of the Hudnall. Dr. Van Cleef & Albert Baade were Tyler Junior College administrators. The memo is rather lengthy and is reprinted here in its entirety.

Fort Worth Zoo - From meager beginnings the Zoo has grown into a nationally ranked family attraction The oldest continuous zoo site in Texas, the Fort Worth Zoo was founded in 1909 with one lion, two bear cubs, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock and a few rabbits. From these humble beginnings, the Zoo has grown into a nationally ranked facility, housing more than 350 native and exotic species. From 1909 to October 1991, the Fort Worth Zoo was owned as well as operated by the City of Fort Worth. During the city's tenure, a long-standing tradition began of collecting money from the community to purchase animals for the Zoo. In 1939, the Zoological Society (now the Fort Worth Zoological Association) formed as a nonprofit organization to help raise additional funds to purchase even more animals. In October 1991—with the Zoo facing decreasing support, demands to replace outdated animal housing and sharp declines in attendance—the Association assumed management of the Zoo's day-to-day operations under a contract with the City of Fort Worth. Since 1991, the Association has raised more than $70 million from private entities, foundations and corporations for Zoo improvements and new exhibits. In 1992, the Zoo hosted a grand reopening, unveiling two new exhibits—World of Primates and Asian Falls—and numerous improvements throughout the Zoo. Within the first year, Zoo attendance soared to approximately one million visitors in a fiscal year—almost double the previous year—and has continued to rise. Since 1992, the Zoo has opened 15 permanent exhibits and support facilities, virtually creating a new zoo. Ten years of improvements and Association management was celebrated with the addition of Texas Wild!, which actually houses seven distinct exhibits within the 8-acre complex. The following new features have been opened since the Association assumed management of the Zoo: * 1992: World of Primates, Asian Falls * 1993: Raptor Canyon, Asian Rhino Ridge, Gloria Lupton Tennison Education Center, Portraits of the Wild Art Gallery * 1994: Chee·tos Cheetahs * 1995: Flamingo Bay, FUJIFILM Komodo Dragons, Terminix Insect City * 1997: Meerkat Mounds * 1999: Thundering Plains * 2001: Texas Wild! In addition to these new exhibits, substantial improvements have been made to Zoo facilities, including handicap accessibility as defined by ADA standards, as well as improvements to restrooms, shade structures, walkways, food outlets, picnic areas, animal areas and exhibit space. Public reaction to the Zoo's renaissance has been tremendous, making the Fort Worth Zoo one of the most popular attractions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Zoo has been ranked as a top zoo in the nation by Family Life magazine, the Los Angeles Times and USA Today, and as one of the top zoos in the South by Southern Living Reader's Choice Awards. Marshall Depot - Marshall (named after Chief Justice John Marshall) began on January 30, 1841, when the Congress of the Republic of Texas authorized its creation as the seat of Harrison county. By virtue of its location on the eastern edge of the state, Marshall benefited from the influx of settlers from the east seeking access to the vast regions of Texas. The area surrounding Marshall was also fertile and ripe for development, so that by 1850 Marshall was the 6th largest city in the state. The fact that in 1850 Marshall had 1,189 residents, versus 11,822 residents total in Harrison county (the most populous in Texas), illustrates the agrarian nature of the area. For a number of years Marshall was the wealthiest, most advanced and civilized place in Texas, boasting among other things, the first telegraph office in Texas. But Marshall's greatest growth and prosperity were still in the future, and would be linked directly to the railroads and their fortunes.

Dallas Farmers Market - Dallas Farmers Market is recognized nationally as an important center where farmers still sell their seasonal crops directly to customers. Located in the southeastern corner of the central business district in downtown Dallas at 1010 South Pearl Street, Dallas, Texas 75201, it provides a unique opportunity to shop for fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, specialty and international products. The seeds of today’s Dallas Farmers Market were planted back in the late 1800s. That’s when farmers from the rural areas surrounding the rapidly growing city began bringing fresh produce, pigs and chickens to sell on the very site now occupied by the Market. This informal arrangement continued until 1941, when the first open-air shed sprouted and the city officially recognized the Dallas Farmers Market. Additional buildings were added in 1946, 1954 and 1982. Today, the Dallas Farmers Market is one of the few places in the country where farmers sell their crops directly to customers. And because it’s located downtown, it’s the perfect shopping spot for residents, office workers and visitors looking for a taste of Texas at its freshest. Plus, with extras like cooking classes, a collection of international merchants, flower and gardening vendors, and a full calendar of events, there’s something to suit every taste at the Dallas Farmers Market.
