WHITMAN MISSION NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: TRAVEL BRIEF - Whitman Mission, located in the southeastern part of Washington State, preserves the site of Waiilatpu Mission, a Presbyterian mission to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847. The site also served as a stopping point for pioneers following the Oregon Trail. The park preserves the foundations of the mission buildings, the Mill Pond and irrigation ditch, and the mission's gravesite. Native grasses in the park give visitors a strong visual sense of how the mission looked to its original habitants.
JOHN MUIR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: TRAVEL BRIEF - This site preserves the 14-room mansion where the naturalist John Muir lived from 1890 until his death in 1914. While living in Martinez, Muir battled to prevent Yosemite National Park's Hetch Hetchy Valley from being dammed, served as the first president of the Sierra Club, played a prominent role in the creation of several national parks, and wrote hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles and several books expounding on the virtues of conservation and the natural world. The Muir house and historic Martinez adobe became part of the National Park Service in 1964.
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK: TRAVEL BRIEF - National parks and national preserves boast some of the most beautiful land in the country, and Yosemite National Park is no exception. It harbors a grand collection of waterfalls, meadows, and forests that include groves of giant sequoias, the world's largest living things. SITES THAT SHAPED OHIO HISTORY - Before canals and railroads brought prosperity to the Maumee Valley of northwest Ohio, newly arrived frontiersmen fought Native Americans and the British for control of the valley. In 1794, U.S. General "Mad" Anthony Wayne built Fort Defiance at the junction of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers in what's now downtown Defiance. Inside a dark earthen outline of the fort, a granite boulder remains to mark the flagstaff pointing travelers north.
LOESS HILLS, IOWA - The Loess Hills, which the wind sculpted from silt deposits as glaciers retreated eons ago, dominate a narrow section of western Iowa in the Big Sioux and Missouri River valleys. The region stretches from Akron (about 25 miles north of Sioux City) south through the Council Bluffs area to Hamburg, just north of the Missouri state line. While the silty loess (pronounced "luss") soil is common, it's accumulated in such proportions in only a few places (Germany, China and Iowa).

With the promise of snow and no lines I had no trouble selling the idea to my family. As with all vacations, the next step was where to stay?
ENGLAND: CYCLING THE ROYAL THAMES VALLEY. - The River Thames is England's royal thoroughfare - for centuries, kings and queens used it as a link between their palaces and castles. Along its meandering course, much of the nation's history has been written.
WEST VIRGINIA: OAK HILL, ROCK AND REPEL WITH ACE ADVENTURE. - Staring out over the New River Valley Gorge, adrenaline pumping through my system and rain soaking everything I should have been miserable or scared. Strangely, I was neither. That's saying something for someone that's as terrified of heights as I am. Sitting there, looking out at such an incredibly beautiful view, I felt such an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.
VIRGINIA: LURAY CAVERNS, GOING UNDERGROUND WITH THE KIDS. - Last summer on our return from Canada to Florida we made a few stops in Virginia. One of those stops was Luray Caverns just off US 81. Even though I spend most of the calendar year teaching middle school science I was surprised at the abundance of underground possibilities in Virginia. For years I have explained to my students that 400 million years ago a continental shift caused the Blue Ridge Mountains. That what is now the Shenandoah Valley was once at the bottom of the sea. This shift caused conditions that eventually resulted in the formation of hundreds of caves and caverns located in North America. Last summer I had the chance to show my own children first hand one of these ancient wonders of the natural world.
IDAHO: SUN VALLEY OFF-SLOPE TIME. - Of course Sun Valley has a world-class ski mountain. Doesn't every ski resort? What sets Sun Valley apart from the rest of the Rocky Mountain West is the plethora of off- slope activities, the vast wilderness that envelops the region and the small town atmosphere of Ketchum and Sun Valley.
PENNSYLVANIA: HIDDEN VALLEY, SNOW TUBING THE ICE MONSTER. - Hidden Valley, Snow Tubing the Ice Monster. Hidden Valley Resort has created winter amusement area called "Outback Park". The new area features The Ice Monster, the longest, steepest snow-tubing run in Pennsylvania.
