The North [nce.jpg]Carolina Estuarium exists
PADDLING NORTH CAROLINA'S NEW RIVER: PART II - Part I of this series was published in March of 2005. In Part II, I describe some of the details from our time on the New River in August of 1993.
PADDLING NORTH CAROLINA'S NEW RIVER: PART I - If you are looking for fun, adventure, good exercise, relaxation, and beautiful scenery all rolled into a single experience, you might want to try a canoe trip on the North Carolina section of the New River. Most famous for its exhilarating white water further north in West Virginia, the North Carolina
EXPLORERS FIND SOURCE OF THE AMAZON RIVER - Explorers from an international team sponsored by National Geographic determined the precise source of the Amazon River high in the mountains of Peru late last year. It is a truly historic scientific discovery.
THE BEND IN THE RIVER - Some of the most spectacular scenery in Texas lies out west in the Big Bend region where the Rio Grande makes a gigantic S-curve. This is the sort of landscape associated with the state, especially by those whose mental images of Texas were formed by watching western movies filmed with locations
DESTINATIONS: GRAND CANYON : RAFTING THE GRAND CANYON - OK, this isn't for little kids, but if your kids are a little older and more adventerous, there is no better way to see the Grand Canyon than to raft down the middle of it. When you're deep inside the Canyon, you experience it differently. You get to watch the colors change on the walls throughout the day, you get to explore its cracks and crevicies and you ride on the river that created it. It's truly a once in a lifetime experience.
DESTINATIONS GRAND CANYON - It is a big hole. Lots of rock, a tiny, tiny river down at the bottom, pretty hot in the summer. At least that's how we joked about seeing the Grand Canyon on the way there; our oldest asked (first time funny, 167th time not as funny) "Are we just gonna look into a big hole for five days?"
DESTINATIONS: SINGAPORE : THINGS TO DO: BOAT RIDE - For those who watched enough PBS to know that "bum" means "butt" in British English, it is unclear why the small cargo boats that used to work the Singapore River are called "bum boats" but they are, and you can now sit your bum down in them and enjoy a very pleasant ride. The boats include not stupid recorded commentary about the historic and cultural things you'll see, and provide a very cooling break from walking around Singapore's Colonial area. Plus, thirsty Moms and Dads, we found if you ask nicely the boat driver will drop you off on the opposite side of the river from whence you board, right in front of about a million eating and drinking places on Clarke or Boat Quays.
DESTINATIONS: TOKYO : WHAT TO DO: SUMIDA RIVER LINE RIVER CRUISES - In Paris the boats that cruise the Seine take you under bridges hundreds of years old, bridges that maybe some famous French person crossed, or at least looked at. In Tokyo, the Sumida River Line boat passes under 12 bridges, some of which are concrete and stone, others which are stone and concrete. The river banks are encased in concrete (gray with black streaks as is traditional in old Edo) and the water is murky. If your kid fell in he would never grow hair again.
DESTINATIONS: BANGKOK SOME THINGS TO SEE AND DO: WATER TAXI - This turned out to be one of the unexpected way fun things that makes travel worth doing. Bangkok sits alongside a wide river, and is interlaced with canals. Many have been filled in over the years as cars outpaced boats, but water travel is still very much a real thing in the city.

A SOLDIER'S WIFE - Renee Calderon, 31, a former schoolteacher from the Bronx, NY, says she has what many consider the most difficult job in the world -- she's a military wife and mother. Her husband, Enrique (Rick), 25, also from the Bronx, is a corporal in the United States Marines, and is stationed in Kuwait. As a heavy equipment operator and engineer, he works on building runways for planes to land and camps for prisoners of war. Rick has been in the military for four years and recently reenlisted at Marine Corps Air Station New River, located in Jacksonville, N.C. The couple lives in nearby Camp Lejeune with their son, Sean, born in August 2002.
CONFESSIONS OF A HAPPY MOM - My 6-year-old son Carter is studying lantern fish. He tells me they are bioluminescent -- "that means they glow from within, Mom." He calls me Mom instead of Mommy, or Mama, now that he is 6. He has blue eyes the color of a river, sandy blonde hair, and a gap-toothed smile. He is so beautiful it takes my breath away. At least once a day, I try to make a point of seeing him as he is. If I blink I can imagine the young man he will become. If I close my eyes I can remember the baby in my arms. It's topsy-turvy, this business of being Mom.
