Sundance Summer Theatre - Centuries ago, the Ute Indians retreated to this canyon to escape the summer heat and hunt the abundant game. By the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the Stewarts, a family of Scottish immigrants, had settled the canyon. While the first generations were mostly surveyors and sheepherders, the next generation saw excitement and opportunity in the snow-laden slopes beneath Mount Timpanogos. In the Fifties, the Stewarts opened Timphaven, a local ski resort which boasted a chair lift, a rope tow, and a burger joint named Ki-Te-Kai--Somoan for "Come and get it!" (One of the Stewarts had served as a Mormon missionary to the islands.) In 1969, Robert Redford bought Timphaven and much of the surrounding land from the Stewart family, and Sundance was born. Rejecting advice from New York investors to fill the canyon with an explosion of lucrative hotels and condominiums, Redford saw his newly acquired land as an ideal locale for environmental conservation and artistic experimentation.

R.V. Jensen Living Historical Farm - Life must be lived forward, but can only be understood backwards,"- profound words by the well-known philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard-a simple concept that has been lost in the demands of the world. As we look backward to our successes as well as our mistakes, we learn to better respect and appreciate our heritage. The essence of the American West Heritage Center is to provide an opportunity to reflect backward to better understand how to live forward and positively impact our quality of life. Park City Silver Mine - The Ontario Silver Mine had several working shafts. The mine is over 2,500 feet deep.(The Empire State Building in New York City is 1,250 feet high.) We traveled to the 1,500-foot level of the mine in an elevator that held eight people and traveled through total darkness for over three minutes. This is not a place for those with claustrophobia. Below the 1,500-foot-level the mineshafts are flooded. It would take millions of dollars and nearly one year to pump all of the water out of those shafts and tunnels and longer to bring all of the tunnels back to safe usage. Once we arrived at the 1,500-foot level, we boarded the mine train. It was like riding in a cage and down the sloping tunnel we rode for nearly one mine. During the trip, we spotted a horizontal tunnel which was three miles long. When that tunnel was dug it was started within the mine and at the other end. When the both ends met it, the tunnel was only one-quarter of an inch off center! Great engineering!!

Dinosaur National Monument - Dinosaur National Monument protects a large deposit of fossil bones of creatures that lived nearly 150 million years ago. The fossils help us learn more about these fascinating animals. Dinosaur National Monument is special because visitors can see fossils exposed on the cliff face of the Douglass Quarry at the park visitor center. This site provides one of the best snapshots of Jurassic dinosaurs found anywhere in the world. The quarry was named after Earl Douglass, the paleontologist who found it. From 1909 through 1924, when work focused on excavating museum specimens, the Douglass Quarry produced more: · complete dinosaur skeletons; · well-preserved dinosaur skulls; · juvenile dinosaurs specimens; · and different kinds of dinosaurs than any other single site. Fossils from the Douglass Quarry are displayed in the Carnegie Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, Denver Museum of Natural History, and in many other American museums.

The College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum - A young geology professor from Southern California, Don Burge was teaching a night class when he issued a challenge to the class: "You people are crazy! You have the greatest dinosaurs and no place to show them off." The students took him up on the challenge and in the summer of 1960 held meetings with professionals to determine what it took to create a museum from the ground up. Young Don with All' Dorman second from left It soon became apparent that the community was also rich in archaeological artifacts. In 1961, Dr. J. Eldon Dorman, local physician, was selected to be the first Curator of Archaeology. Dorman had many years of experience studying area rock art. Prehistoric artifacts from the Fremont Culture and the Anasazi Culture began to pour into the museum from many sources in the area. By June 3, 1961, the new Carbon College Prehistoric Museum had taken hold on the upper floor hall of the Price City Hall and opened to the public.

Western Mining and Railroad Museum - The Western Mining and Railroad Museum is located in the small town of Helper, Utah, two hours southeast of Salt Lake City, named so because of the engines required to help the trains climb the steep grades to Soldier Summit. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad established the town when the railroad came through the area and coal, that was needed to fuel the steam engines, was found. By 1891 the depot, roundhouse and a hotel were built and the town was beginning. As more coal mines were opened it became the railroad center and the "hub" for coal miners and their families from the many mining camps. The camps were full of European and Asian immigrants and some of them came into Helper to build the town. This is the story told by the Western Mining and Railroad Muesum.

Paul Bunyan's Woodpile - A geological curiosity--rare in Utah--the "woodpile" is a cluster of lava logs formed about 30-million years ago during the Eocine period. The logs were formed when a lava flow cooled into orderly columner joints having 3 to 6 sides. The column measures about a foot in diamater and up to 15-feet in length. This formation was on the rim of a caldera that collapsed due to a voild left when lava flowed out from under the caldera. Basin and range faulting caused the formation to tilt onto its side. Erosion has exposed the formation we now see.
